AKRON -- Police have charged the owner of a Rottweiler that attacked and severely injured a 7-year-old girl.
Ah-Jia Lollis was riding her scooter down Welsh Avenue when police say a neighbor's dog got out of an enclosure and attacked the child.
Lollis suffered bites to her neck, ear, shoulder and chest.
She was taken to Akron Children's Hospital where she underwent surgery.
Witnesses say two young men who live on the street helped rescue the girl by kicking the dog and chasing it away as they waited for paramedics to arrive.
On Wednesday, Akron Police charged the dog owner, Harvey Leek, 53, with failure to control and owning a vicious dog.
The child's mother, Kimberly Lollis, says she'd seen the dog before but never out loose.
Lollis says Leek apologized for what happened.
Animal control officers euthanized the dog on Wednesday. The animal was current in vaccinations, according to police, but it will still be tested for rabies.
Leek will appear in court next week for the misdemeanor charges.
