MIDDLEFIELD -- Two Middlefield police officers who were shot during what was believed to be a routine traffic stop back in March were honored Thursday night.
Both officers have since been released from the hospital and were honored at a special awards presentation at St. Lucy's Parish in Middlefield.
The officers, along with those who responded to their aid, were recognized for their courage and commitment to protecting the Middlefield community.
On March 10, 2013 Officer Brandon Savage and Officer Erin Thomas pulled James L. Gil Gilkerson over while on patrol.
Before they could exit their cruiser, police say the man got out of his car and fired at the officers.
Officers then exited their cruiser and returned fire, killing Gilkerson.
Officer Thomas was shot in the hand. She was taken by a University Hospitals MedEvac helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.
Officer Savage was hit in the leg by shrapnel and was taken to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center for treatment.
