Wayne County: Child hospitalized after Amish buggy accident

SALT CREEK TOWNSHIP -- Troopers are investigating a 3-vehicle crash that sent a 5-year-old boy to the hospital with serious injuries.

The accident happened Saturday just after 11:00 a.m.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Matthew Miller, 19, was headed east on County Road 2 when he crashed into the rear of an Amish-style buggy headed in the same direction. The buggy went off the side of the road. 

Miller's car then crossed into the westbound lanes hitting an oncoming car driven by Melissa Whitworth, 43.

The buggy was driven by Joseph Yoder. He was travelling with his two children, ages 9 and 5. Yoder and his 9-year-old son were treated at the scene. 

The 5-year-old boy was taken to Wooster Community Hospital before being taken by LifeFlight to Akron Children's Hospital with serious injuries.

Miller and Whitworth were also were also treated at the scene.

Initial investigation reveals speed and driver inattention were factors in the crash.
