COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Democrats in the Ohio Senate have introduced a bill to expand the Medicaid program under the federal health care law after the idea was stripped from the state budget.
State Sen. Shirley Smith of Cleveland said Wednesday her measure mirrors Gov. John Kasich's proposal to extend the federal-state program to provide health coverage to more low-income Ohioans.
House Democrats have introduced the same bill. House Republicans dropped Medicaid expansion from the two-year state budget before sending the spending blueprint to the Senate last month.
Senate President Keith Faber said last week that his chamber's version of the budget won't include Medicaid expansion, but he said Medicaid "reform" is not dead in Ohio.
Democrats want to bring the Republican governor's plans for Medicaid expansion to a vote.
