PERRY TOWNSHIP -- One man is dead after an early-morning accident.
At 2:22 a.m. Thursday, the Lake County Sheriff's Office responded to a single-vehicle injury accident in the area of 2536 Hale Road.
Deputies found a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by David McMahon, 26, of Perry Township, had been traveling eastbound when McMahon lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway on the south side.
His vehicle struck a mailbox post in the front yard of 2536 Hale, then striking a tree in the front yard of 2562 Hale.
His vehicle then became airborne and landed roof first against another significantly larger tree in the front yard at 2562 Hale.
McMahon was unconscious and trapped in his vehicle, which had come to final rest on the passenger side roof area approximately 160 feet from where it had initially left the roadway.
McMahon was extricated from the Grand Am and taken to the Madison Medical Campus. He sustained severe head, neck and chest trauma, and efforts to revive him were not successful. He was pronounced dead.
The investigation indicates that speed and alcohol may have played a part in the accident.
