AKRON -- University of Akron Police say a man shot and killed by a university police officer this morning pulled a BB gun pistol that looked like a .45 caliber handgun.

The officer fired his weapon at the man during a mid-morning traffic stop in the 600 block of Wolf Ledges near the BMV.

According to a University spokeswoman, as the officer approached the car during the traffic stop, the driver pulled what appeared to be a handgun.  The officer then shot and killed the driver.

The driver, 64, has been identified as James Genda of Akron.

The officer was not hurt.
