CLEVELAND -- Cleveland police and animal control officers raided a home today to break up a suspected cockfighting ring.

Officers executed a search warrant as part of an investigation into allegations of cockfighting and animal abuse.

Roosters, hens, doves and a turkey were among the animals removed from the house at W. 60th and Madison.  Animal control officers estimate some 95 birds were taken away, including 80 roosters.

The animals were taken to Happy Trails Farm and it's believed that none of them will have to be put down.

The city's chief animal control officer says authorities were tipped off to the house by police who had responded to the home for another complaint. Reportedly the owner and a friend were involved in an altercation.

Family and friends say cock fighting was not going on at the house and that owning chickens and roosters in Puerto Rico is much like dogs and cats in the U.S.

The home owner is now facing anywhere from a $150 fine for owning a rooster without a permit to $1000 fine and 6 months in jail if he's charged with animal fighting.
