BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 28-year-old Vermilion man was killed in a head-on crash with a pickup truck in Lorain County Thursday evening, highway patrol said.
The pickup truck was headed south on Baumhart Road, south of Middle Ridge Road in Brownhelm Township around 5:28 p.m. The truck swerved left of the center line, clipping the back of an oncoming car and colliding head-on with another.
The truck flipped onto the passenger side and slid off the road, into the guardrail.
The driver of the car struck head-on, Dale W. Welty, 28, of Vermilion, died in the crash. He was wearing his seat belt.
The driver of the truck, Christopher R. Dewitt, 20, of Elyria, was not wearing his seat belt. He was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center.
His passenger, Nicholas A. Kidd, 25, of New London, suffered minor injuries. He refused treatment by emergency workers.
The driver whose car was clipped in the rear, Brandon S. Danicki, 17, of Amherst, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.
Officials suspect Dewitt may have been under the influence of drugs. Officials would not comment on any pending charges while the prosecutor's office reviews the case.
The crash remains under investigation by the Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
