Authorities say two people have died after the twister hit a mobile home park near Shawnee about 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City.

A storm spotter has told the National Weather Service that the tornado "scoured" the landscape in the park and an area along Interstate 40.

The highway has been closed because of overturned tractor-trailers that now litter the road. Television footage showed the twister approaching an area near the Shawnee Reservoir.

Earlier, a tornado had been spotted near Edmond, Oklahoma, and was part of the same storm that eventually moved eastward into Shawnee.

Meanwhile, Sedgwick County, Kan., emergency management director Randy Duncan says officials are "very grateful" about the few reports of damage from the tornado that touched down near Wichita Mid-Continent Airport shortly before 4 p.m. CDT Sunday.

The tornadoes are part of a large storm system moving through the Plains and upper Midwest that brought reported touchdowns in Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa on Sunday.

Much of this same area will be under the risk for tornadoes again on Monday.
