MENTOR, Ohio -- It looked and sounded like a fire at the Great Lakes Mall Sunday night, but it was just a drill.

After the mall closed for the night, Mentor firefighters set off smoke for simulated fire training. Fighting fires in confined, yet sprawling spaces takes different skills. From being able to locate the fire to getting equipment to the right place.

"These hallways are all different. You can easily get turned around and disoriented in these hallways and that's what we're trying to bring into this drill -- is to maintain that awareness in our firefighters and to have each piece t o be actively put together like a puzzle," said Mentor Fire Department Lt. Nathan Peters.

The drill helps to sharpen firefighters' skills and build confidence.
The department plans to hold a similar drill again at Great Lakes Mall next week.
