MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Transportation says Route 87, in both directions, has been reopened in Middlefield.
A crash, reported by the Geauga County Sheriff's Office on Twitter to be fatal, closed the road between Route 528 and Route 534 early Wednesday morning.
The Ohio Highway Patrol says the crash occurred at the intersection State Route 87 and Hayes Road at approximately 6:50 a.m.
A 1986 Suzuki Cavalcade motorcycle was traveling westbound on State Route 87. A 2000 Volvo garbage truck was traveling eastbound on State Route S7.
The garbage truck attempted to turn left onto Hayes Road and failed to yield to the motorcycle. The motorcycle traveled left of center to avoid the collision but struck the right rear of the garbage truck.
A 2001 Honda CRV was traveling eastbound on State Route 87 behind the garbage truck and struck the motorcycle after the initial impact with the garbage truck.
The 1986 Suzuki motorcycle was being driven by Charles Linn, 67, of Andover. Linn was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash and died at the scene.
The 2000 Volvo garbage truck was driven by Kevin Radke. 41, of Solon, and his passenger was Christopher Ashburn of Streetsboro. Both had their seatbelts on and were not injured.
The 2001 Honda CRV was being driven by Cari Barath, 31, of Mesopotamia and she had a boy, 1, as her passenger.
Both had their seatbelts on and were not injured. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash at this time. This crash remains under investigation.
