AKRON -- Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Alison McCarty sentenced Diana L. Vandyne, 47, of Mogadore to four years and nine months in prison. Her driver's license has been suspended for the rest of her life.

On July 17, 2012, Vandyne was driving the car that struck and killed 16-year-old Springfield High School sophomore Anthony Weakland.

Vandyne originally pleaded not guilty after she was arrested July 26, 2012, and charged with tampering with evidence and felony hit-skip.

She changed her plea to guilty on May 31, 2013. She will also get credit for time served since her arrest.

In court, Judge McCarty read a portion of Vandyne's statement, "I was irresponsible in my decisions. I wish I could have been the one who died. My heart is so dark and sad."

Weakland, a Springfield High School sophomore, was walking with a friend along Albrecht Avenue near his family's South Columbine Avenue home when he was clipped from behind by a passing vehicle, driven by Vandyne.

Family members told Channel 3 News that they are still devastated by the loss.

"Four years and nine months isn't exactly fair but the way the law works they couldn't do much more," said Allison Weakland, his sister. "We are going to start closure now, try to pick us up as best as we can."
