VALLEY VIEW -- A pick-up truck driver hit by a sign ripped loose by powerful thunderstorm winds is listed in critical condition at the hospital.
At least three of the overhead highway signs fell on rush hour traffic as strong storms rolled through yesteray afternoon.
The sign smashed the roof and windshield of the pickup truck.
The accident closed the westbound lanes of I-480 for about a half hour, as rush hour traffic came to a standstill.
The large, green signs point the way to I-77 North and South. Another sign directs traffic to Cleveland. The missing signs will have the greatest impact on visitors to the area, who are unfamiliar with the roads.
Amanda Lee, spokesperson for ODOT, says the repairs have been given priority, but are expected to take a few days. The signs must be reordered and then crews will have to use cranes to lift them back into place.
Those repairs are expected to take place during the overnight hours.
