ORANGE VILLAGE -- Police here confirm that an officer-involved crash occured at 1:38 p.m. northbound on Interstate 271.

Orange Police Sgt. Mike Roberts tells Channel 3 that the officer, Robert Rosic, 45, a 20-year veteran of the force, was found unconscious in the police SUV.

Rosic had been conducting traffic enforcement on the west berm when his SUV was struck. He was taken taken by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

Rosic was released just after 6 p.m.

The Orange Village police SUV was allegedly rear-ended by the driver of a white Dodge with New Jersey license plates but Roberts would not confirm that information or if the driver was in custody.

ODOT confirms that the I-271 northbound local lanes were closed at Harvard Road due to the accident but have reopened.

Police from Orange, Beachwood, South Russell and Moreland Hills went to the scene as part of the Valley Enforcement Group accident investigation unit.

Fire engines from at least two departments were also there.
