Rangers' pitcher attacked while walking downtown

CLEVELAND -- The Texas Rangers say pitcher Tanner Scheppers sustained facial bruises after being attacked while walking in downtown Cleveland this week.

But Cleveland police say Scheppers was involved in a fight outside the Panini's restaurant on West 6th Street ahbout 2:30 a.m. Friday.

The Rangers say Scheppers suffered a bruised eye and contusion. He was unavailable to pitch in Friday night's 11-8 loss to the Indians in 11 innings.

The Rangers say the incident occurred a few blocks from the team's hotel. The club arrived in Cleveland after playing an afternoon game on Thursday in Texas.

Police tell WKYC that the incident involving Scheppers did not occur on Public Square as originally reported by some media.

Police say the preliminary investigation reveals that on Friday, July 26, at approximately 2:30 a.m. Scheppers was involved in a physical altercation at Panini's Bar located on W. 6th Street.

Further investigation reveals that the altercation was called in by Downtown Cleveland Alliance workers and that Third District officers responded to the scene to investigate.

Scheppers declined medical assistance and declined to file a police report, police said.
