CLEVELAND -- Ariel Castro made a statement during his sentencing hearing and he told the court "I'm not a monster. I'm sick."
Castro re-iterated points he brought up during his plea hearing that he was a victim of sex abuse as a child and has an addiction to porn. "I am not trying to make excuses," Castro told the court.
"I'm a happy person inside," Castro said. He said he did a good job for his 21 years as a bus driver. But towards the end of that time he says was trying to get fired because the stress of the situation was too much.
He disputed family claims that he was abusive.
Castro says the kidnappings were out of character for him and were not planned.
"I'm not a violent person."
He apologized to the women but claimed the sex in the house was consensual and says the women weren't tortured.
Castro concluded by saying he hopes people can find it in their hearts to forgive him.
