MILAN TOWNSHIP -- The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a serious injury crash that occurred on the Ohio Turnpike in the eastbound lanes just before noon Friday.

A grey 2013 Honda Goldwing motorcycle sustained heavy disabling damage to both sides of the vehicle and was towed from the scene.

James Allen Metzinger, 64, of Canfield, was ejected from the motorcycle. He suffered serious incapacitating injuries and was flown from the scene of the crash by Life Flight to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

Metzinger was not wearing a helmet.

A silver 2005 Dodge Caravan sustained minor damage to the rear of the right side of the vehicle, the vehicle remained drivable and was released from the scene.

It was driven by Ryan F. Knaack, 25, of Albany, New York. He was not injured.

Both vehicles were eastbound on the Ohio Turnpike when the motorcycle moved from the center lane and sideswiped the Caravan, which was in the left lane.

Metzinger lost control, slid off the roadway, was ejected from the motorcycle and thrown against the median wall.

Several Ohio Turnpike patrons including Dr. Jonathan Schweid, assisted with life saving measures until North Central EMS arrived on scene.

Also on scene were Milan Township Fire, Life Flight, and the Ohio Turnpike Maintenance Department.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this point of the investigation, which is not complete.
