Lake County: Driver slams into utility pole, 2 to hospital

CONCORD TOWNSHIP -- Just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a Lake County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol here in the area of state Rte 84 and state Rte. 44 and saw a speeding, reckless vehicle traveling up the exit ramp of Rt. 44 north toward Rt. 84.

The deputy saw the 2002 Buick collide head-on into a utility pole and called the fire department.

Upon investigating the crash, the deputy discovered that a Painesville woman, 33, was the driver and appeared to be under the influence of alcoholic beverages.

Also in the vehicle was the driver's adult niece and three children, ages 2, 8 and 8. The 2-year-old and adult niece were taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation with minor injuries.

The other two 8-year-olds and their mother, the driver, were not injured.

The driver was arrested and charged with OVI, several traffic violations and child endangering.
