CLEVELAND -- A domestic incident escalated to a deadly shooting on Cleveland's east side Thursday night.

Cleveland Police say the shooting occurred at the Park Place Apartments, close to 10:30 p.m., in the area of East 105th Street and Ashbury Avenue.

A Geneva-on-the-Lake police officer, working a second job for a private security company, was checking out a disturbance in the hallway. Police said he saw a man and woman struggling in the hallway.

The man then pointed a gun at the officer. That officer says he noticed the gun's laser point aimed below the officer's belt.

The officer ordered the man to drop the weapon. When he refused, the officer fired his weapon at the man, who died at the scene.

Cleveland's Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating.

The medical examiner identifies the man who was fatally shot as Kenneth Thompson, 47, of Cleveland Heights.
