CLEVELAND -- A trial witness in Cleveland says a man charged in a suspected $100 million Navy charity fraud showed off his political connections.
Tampa, Fla., dentist Gary Steen testified Wednesday in the trial of a man who identifies himself as Bobby Thompson. Authorities say he is actually 67-year-old Harvard-trained attorney and former military intelligence officer John Donald Cody.
Steen says Thompson expressed appreciation for dental work by giving him three mugs with photos of himself and former President George W. Bush.
The prosecution says Thompson used his Republican-leaning political connections, including photos with VIPs, to encourage donations to the charity but that it was a scam.
The defense says the charity was involved in legitimate political donations.
Thompson was a fugitive for two years and arrested last year in Portland, Ore.
