Eleven year old Quintus Oates was killed on Thanksgiving Day when he and a family friend were playing with a gun and it went off. The shooting happened inside the family friend’s home on East 64th Street in Cleveland. Now, for the first time, Oates mother is saying that her son's death may not have been an accident. She tells Channel 3 News that the 12-year old holding the gun may have wanted to shoot him. "I don't believe it was an accident," Carla Pratt Oates says. "In this day in time, a 12 year old child knows what he’s doing, especially if he lives in [that neighborhood]." Family members say the 12-year olds father owned the gun. Channel 3 was told by Cleveland police that a warrant is out for that father. "I just feel like Quintus was robbed, but I'm not angry, because I know he is in heaven. But that still don’t ease the pain of a mother." Quintus was visiting his old neighborhood for the holiday. His mother moved the family from the east side to Lakewood--- a few years back. "I wanted to give my children a better education." "Tuesday was the hardest day of my 29 years of living. I walked into a funeral home with a suit to pick a casket for my child." Cleveland police continue to investigate the shooting. The wake for Quintus Oates will be Friday at 6pm at Pentecostal Determined Church of God, located at 9105 Miles Park Avenue in Cleveland. A funeral service will immediately follow. The family is asking for donations be made to the "Friends and Family of Quintus Oates" fund at any Charter One bank branch.
