AKRON, OHIO - An Akron Police Officer is on paid administrative leave after he shot a suspect who was reaching for an assault rifle.
After the suspect was shot, he was transported to Akron General Medical Center where he later died.
Officers responded to the call around 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with reports of a fight with injuries at an apartment building in the 1000 block of Florida Avenue.
The caller stated he was involved in an altercation with a 61-year-old man who was his neighbor, and the neighbor had slammed his arm in a car door.
When officers went to approach the suspect, they observed him reach for an assault rifle.
One officer fired shots at the suspect when the suspect refused to obey loud verbal commands from police.
The suspect's name is being withheld until the family has been notified.
No officers were injured during the altercation, and the officer who shot the suspect is a two-year veteran of the department.
The decision to place the officer on paid administrative leave is per departmental procedure.
Police are still investigating the incident.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is also on scene.
