AKRON, Ohio -- Summer break has been unexpectedly extended for some Akron students because their first two days of classes are canceled.
Main Prep Academy, an Akron charter school, was supposed to open Thursday, but a fire from July has caused the last-minute delay.
“We have been working diligently to repair the damage so we could open on time and without issue,” officials posted on the school’s Facebook page Wednesday. “As of yesterday, the building inspector had already given a verbal approval for a partial occupancy. The final step of approval was the fire inspection – which took place today – to determine whether they would sign off on occupancy as well.”
Instead of giving the immediate all clear, school officials say the fire marshal recommended opening the building on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“The safety of our students and staff is our main priority, so we agree with the fire marshal,” their Facebook post continued. “School will resume for the 2016–2017 school year on Tuesday, September 6. We want to emphasize that this should not affect our school year in any way other than that our Main Prep students get two extra days of summer break this year! The remainder of the year will proceed as scheduled and expected.”
