CLEVELAND -- US Marshal Peter J. Elliott has been honored by his Alma Mater for his contributions to the legal profession. St. Edward High School made him the recipient of the first Legal Eagles Stewardship Award.
At the school's annual Legal Eagles luncheon, Elliott was recognized for his distinguished law enforcement career. The Stewardship Award was created to honor those who are not lawyers, but make substantial contributions to the legal community.
Elliott, a 1980 graduate of St. Edward's, has innovated many community law enforcement programs during his decade long tenure as US Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio.
His Fugitive Safe Surrender initiative, which started in Cleveland in 2005, has since gone nationwide, offering a second chance to more than 40,000 fugitives from justice.
"This is a great honor," Elliott said of the Stewardship Award. "St. Edward's has always been a big part of my life. It's more than a school. It's a lifetime commitment."
"I appreciate them staying with my througout my career. To be remembered by the school where you have your roots is greatly appreciated."
Also honored was 1987 St. Edward alumnus James P. Sammon, who was named the 2012 Legal Eagles Man of the Year. He was introduced by his brother Al Sammon, class of 1974, who received the same award 12 years ago.
The Legal Eagles is an organization of St. Edward's alumni in the legal field. Dozens of alumni lawyers, judges, and elected officials attended the noontime ceremony Friday at the Wyndham Hotel downtown.
