SANDUSKY -- The Sandusky City Schools released a statement Tuesday on how they will meet the state legislative requirements associated with calamity days.
Here, in part, is the statement:
"...The district will add four additional days to the end of the school year and class will be in session on Wednesday, June 4th, Thursday, June 5th, Friday, June 6th, and the last day for students will be Monday, June 9, 2014. The last day for faculty will be Tuesday, June 10, 2014."
"All Sandusky City School district students are required to be in attendance those additional four days of school as required by state law, except for the Senior Class, as they will graduate on time. A recent decision by the State Legislature provides an additional four calamity days that can be used once a district has developed a plan to make up any additional days."
"Mr. David Danhoff, Chief of Staff and Transformation Officer noted, "We reviewed a number of options at our of how we could make up the days including online assignments known as blizzard bags, but we felt that the best educational option for students would occur when our faculty and staff are engaging them with in-class instruction."
"The Sandusky City Schools used a total of thirteen calamity days this year, which is the most in recent memory. A calamity day is when the school district cancels school due to weather or some other reason that prevents students from attending school. The State of Ohio allows five calamity days within the current rule structure and days that go beyond the state approved five days are required to be made up by the school district."
"Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders, Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer said, "Next year the district will likely entertain a two-hour delay option that will potentially provide us some valuable time in the morning to determine if there is enough improvement in the weather in order for us to open schools."
