Elyria Fire Department finds source of carbon monoxide leak

ELYRIA, OHIO - After a carbon monoxide leak at a Lorain County factory sent two people to the hospital Wednesday, Elyria Fire Department was back out Sunday night investigating the cause.

Elyria Fire Captain Kevin Szabo says crews looked at everything in the facility, Lorain County Automative Systems, including furnaces.

The fire crews identified the source of the carbon monoxide leak to be two forklifts used to help load semi trucks for shipping.

Szabo says crews tested all the forklifts, checking for readings and letting the forklifts idle for a little while to make sure the readings were accurate.

After crews identified the two forklifts, they isolated the two units so they wouldn't be operated.

Szabo says Elyria Fire Department was happy to help figure out what was going on.

"This is an important business in the city," Szabo said.

The factory should be back up and running tonight.
