CLEVELAND -- During Stroke Awareness Month in May, University Hospitals is helping Northeast Ohio residents to "know their numbers" for their risk of stroke. The numbers, including blood pressure and body mass index, can help determine the risk.
Towards that effort, UH will offer free stroke assessments at eight UH locations on May 3, 11a.m. to 2 p.m. and May 31, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Health professionals will be available to discuss participants' personal risk and what steps can be taken toward prevention.
On average, someone has a stroke in the United States once every 40 seconds, it is the fourth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the nation.
Stroke can affect anyone at any age but many strokes could be prevented if people made lifestyle changes. The place to start is to know your numbers such as blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol, and if these numbers are on the high end, they increase your risk for a stroke.
Space is limited, so participants are asked to register in advance for the free stroke assessment by calling 1-800-883-3674.
