CLEVELAND -- It's no holiday for the Bay Village Middle School Lacross team. Tuesday they'll play the last game of the season so practice is unavoidable.
"You want to keep the kids cool. You want to have a lot of breaks. We are only going for an hour today. Typically, we go for an hour and half," Coach Frank Semancik said.
Coach Semancik wraps up with a water balloon fight. It's just a reward in this blistering heat.
When it's this hot, the American Red Cross recommends staying inside. If you must be out, find frequent shade and wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
Stay hydrated. Water is better than soda or sugary drinks and much better than alcohol, which actually does the reverse.
Keep fresh water around for pets. Animals and children will not last long in a closed-up car and cracking open a window is not enough.
The ill and elderly suffer most in the heat. "I don't deal with it very well," said senior Gloria Meinert.
Meinert knows her limit. She took a quick trip to Edgewater Park's beach.
"Drink a lot of fluids. Stay as calm as you can and no running," Meinert recommended.
If you insist on exercising, the safest times are early morning or evening.
According to the National Weather Service, more than half of last year's heat-related deaths occurred in the victim's home.
Fans are ineffective past 90 degrees so, if you don't have air conditioning, cool off with a bath or shower.
Remember to check on your elderly neighbors as well as your pets left outside.
