CLEVELAND -- Video footage obtained by Channel 3 News appears to show an officer kicking a man who is lying on the ground, even though the man was already handcuffed after surrendering to other officers a minute earlier.
Motorist Edward Henderson led police on a high-speed chase New Year's Day, and ultimately pleaded guilty to assault and fleeing an officer.
Henderson is now pursuing a civil lawsuit against police, claiming he was viciously attacked by a number of Cleveland police officers after he was face-down on the ground and handcuffed.
Henderson suffered fractures to his face, a detached retina and other injuries.
The alleged beating was recorded on video from a police helicopter.
That tape, which had not been previously released, shows that Henderson was eventually pulled over following a high-speed car chase, got out of his vehicle, and walked away.
As officers approach, Henderson can be seen lying face-down with his hands spread wide above his head, the video shows.
About a minute after Henderson is handcuffed and down on the ground, it appears an officer is kicking Henderson, while as many as eight officers circle him.
A federal grand jury is now investigating the arrest and what followed.
