Japan marks three year tsunami anniversary

TOKYO -- Today, Japan marks the third anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that left some 19,000 people either dead or missing, turned coastal communities into wasteland and triggered a nuclear crisis.

Japan's prime minister and Emperor Akihito spoke today at a memorial service.

In northern Japan, some tsunami survivors held their own memorial events for their loved ones already today.

Since the double disaster, Japan has struggled to rebuild tsunami-hit communities and to clean up radiation from the meltdowns of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
