Jefferson man dead, 5-year-old flown to Rainbow Babies

ASHTABULA COUNTY -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle crash that resulted in one man dead and a 5-year-old injured.

Just before 10:30 this morning, troopers responded to a traffic crash on State Route 46, north of State Route 307.

The vehicle was a 2004 Cadillac Escalade driven by Gregory J. Miklacic, 42, of Jefferson.

Troopers said he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The preliminary investigation shows the Escalade was traveling north on State Route 46, crossed the center line and drove off the left side of the roadway.

It then struck a ditch and came to rest against a tree.

Jefferson Township Fire responded and Miklacic was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say Shwn Miklacic, 5, was taken to the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was flown via STAT MedEvac to Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital.

Troopers say the child was in a child safety seat that was not properly installed.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
