Liquidation sale at Akron City Center Hotel begins Thursday

Plans to revive the Akron City Center Hotel

AKRON - As plans to reopen the Akron City Center Hotel move forward, developers are hoping to find a new home for many of the items left in the more than 40-year-old building.

A liquidation sale, featuring the hotel’s bedroom sets and furnishings, begins Thursday morning.

“Think of a very large garage sale,” said Jim Long, project manager with International Content Liquidations. “We’re set up like a department store, but if you see it there may not be another one like it so you want to pick it up and take it with you as soon as you can.”

Among the items for sale: chandeliers, bedroom sets, bed sheets, coffee makers, dinnerware, oil paintings and curtains.

The liquidation sale is part of the plan to reopen the 19-story building and transform it into a hotel and apartment complex, led by two local developers who have teamed up to complete the renovation.

“I think it’s a game changer,” developer Joel Testa, president and COO of Testa Cos. told Channel 3 in February after plans to reopen the hotel were announced. “Akron needs people living downtown desperately.”

So in order for that to happen, they need to get rid of a lot of stuff.

According to Long, one of the hot ticket items is the hundreds of Sleep Number beds that includes a box spring and head board. Long said a chemical treatment has been applied to sanitize the mattress.

But there are some items that won’t be up for sale.

“Like the infrastructure of the restaurant. There’s a couple of finer pieces like a piano and an antique that’s up on the 19th floor.”

The liquidation sale is larger than your typical garage sale and may last a few weeks, but it’s still moving fast for a pretty good reason.

“We have people already on a waiting list for the residences here. So there’s absolutely a demand for it.”

The liquidation sale begins Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Click here to find more information.
