10 things to do in NE Ohio Nov. 19-20

It's the weekend before Thanksgiving and there's already lots to do. You can stay inside or brave the outdoors for some fun.

Gateway District Historic Euclid Avenue Tour

Now's your chance to get a closer look at one of downtown's most historic streets. Although the entire 2016 tour season has ended, the Gateway District is still offering the Historic Euclid Avenue tour every Saturday starting at 10 a.m. through Dec. 10. Come and get some exercise while getting a close-up look!

What: Euclid Avenue Historic Tour

Where: Starts at the Euclid Avenue entrance of the The Arcade at 401 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland

When: 10 a.m. Saturdays though Dec. 10

Price: Free  (Parking Note: You can park at Quicken Loans Arena between Huron Road and Prospect Avenue, in the parking garage of 200 Public Square on Superior Avenue, or in the 515 Euclid garage at the corner of East 6th Street and Euclid Avenue. Street parking in the same areas is also available, and meters are free on the weekends)

Great Lakes Science Center 

What: The Great Lakes Science Center at 601 Erieside Avenue sits right on Lake Erie and is open almost every day.

Where: The GLSC is between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum and FirstEnergy Stadium in downtown Cleveland. It is also the home of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater.

When: Although it is closed Mondays through April 2017, it is open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. (EXCEPT for Cleveland Browns home games) Also closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Admission: Varies by venue (Check out the admission fees ) Senior, student and military discounts and there is FREE ADMISSION for all Ohio teachers with school I.D.

Celebrate 20th President James A. Garfield's 185th Birthday at Lake View Cemetery

What: You can join local dignitaries, members of Garfield's family, Lake View Cemetery trustees and a U.S. military representative there on behalf of President Barack Obama for the annual birthday wreath-laying.

Where: Lake View Cemetery's Garfield Memorial at 12316 Euclid Avenue In Cleveland

When: 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday Nov. 19 (Garfield Monument closes at 4 p.m. until April 1, 2017)

Admission: Free

Lake View Cemetery is known as "Cleveland's Outdoor Museum." Founded in 1869, it encompasses 285 acres and is the burial place for many notables, including Garfield, The Untouchables' Eliot Ness, Louis Stokes and his brother Carl Stokes, tycoon John D. Rockefeller and disc jockey Alan Freed who coined the term "rock and roll."

Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation First People Festival

Who were the first people to live in Ohio? Find out about these past cultures and how they have changed. Check out how they lived on and with the land through demonstrations, exhibits, and interactive activities.

What: Face painting, corn grinding, Native American music, Fort Hill hikes to Early American Earthworks, auditorium talks and you can also make a deerskin pouch

When: 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday November 19

Where: Rocky River Reservation at the Rocky River Nature Center, 24000 Valley Parkway in North Olmsted.

Admission: Free (Making a deerskin pouch will cost $5)

 

Cleveland Metroparks Drop-in Children's Nature Craft

What: You will be entertained by naturalist Foster Brown as you create dragonflies from sticks and maple leaf samaras. 

Where: North Chagrin Reservation at the North Chagrin Nature Center, 3037 SOM Center Road in Willoughby Hills, Ohio

When: 2-2:30 p.m. Saturday November 19

Cleveland Metroparks Ohio's Native Animals at Look About Lodge

What: Enjoy images of "Ohio's Native Animals" by local artists at Look About Lodge's annual art show.

Where: South Chagrin Reservation at Look About Lodge, 37374 Miles Road in Bentleyville

When: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. November 19

Admission: Free

 

EARLY WARNING!!!  Don't forget that the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will have FREE ADMISSION to the Zoo AND The Rainforest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Nov. 24 at 3900 Wildlife Way in Cleveland. The Metroparks will have a schedule of feeding times for the animals. You can also take free, heated transportation throughout the Zoo.

 

Cleveland Museum of Art free guided tours

Don't want to be outside this weekend? Stay cozy inside at the Cleveland Museum of Art in University Circle.

What: Guided tours daily Tuesdays through Sundays at 1 p.m. starting at the Information Desk in the Ames Family Atrium. Learn about the CMA collections as you walk through the galleries.

Where: Cleveland Museum of Art at 11150 East Boulevard in Cleveland in University Circle. The museum has its own garage off Jeptha Drive.

Admission: FREE (Some special exhibitions may carry a charge and tickets can be bought online at the museum's ticket center of by calling 216-421-7350.)

 

32nd annual Candlelight Walk in Medina

'Tis the season to walk through history and take in the sights and sounds of the holidays. There will be a parade of lights Saturday with fireworks afterwards. 

What: A Candlelight Walk through Medina Public Square

When: Friday, November 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, November 19 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 20 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission: Free

Parade of Lights: The parade leaves Medina High School at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and goes west down E. Union Street, south on N. Spring Grove Street, west across E. Liberty Street, south down S. Court and east across East Washington Street. It ends at Public Square with fireworks scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

What: Celebrate 19th century Holidays at Frostville Museum, November 18, 19 & 20. Special evening event Friday, November 18, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with luminaries lighting the pathways & bonfire.

Saturday, November 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Magic Act.

Sunday, November 20, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Punch & Judy Puppet Show. There will be arts and crafts and music at the church. You can also do some of your holiday shopping at the General Store..

Where: Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation. 24101 Cedar Point Road at the corner of Lewis and Cedar Point roads. The museum is actually six historic building maintained and operated by the Olmsted Historical Society.
