3 firefighters hurt in battle of fire and ice

CLEVELAND -- It was literally a battle between fire and ice.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and faced frigid temperatures while working to extinguish an early morning blaze at East 45th and Superior.

Cleveland Assistant Fire Chief Michael Darnell explains the tough, frigid conditions his ice-covered team faced:

WKYC's Joe Cronauer was on the scene and says the firefighters were coated in a layer of ice.

Dispatchers said firefighters had problems with their masks freezing to their faces.

The blaze sparked shortly after 4 a.m.

The structure is a two-home dwelling. All those inside safely escaped the fire -- including a family dog.
