Akron receiving millions in grant money

Millions to help Akron

AKRON - Over the past few weeks, Akron has had money flowing into town like water flows through the Ohio and Erie Canal.

Soon, a tiger will be unleashed on downtown. Not the kind with stripes, but one in check form. Five million dollars in a TIGER Federal transportation grant. The plan is for the money to serve as a jumpstart for downtown development.

The City of Kent received a TIGER grant several years ago, spawning nearly one-hundred million in downtown investment.

The second is a $4.47 million dollar SAFER grant,  allowing the Akron Fire Department to add 25 firefighter/medics, bringing staff numbers in line with the city's needs. It adds resources already stretched thin from the opioid crisis.
