Akron City prosecutors looking into charges against fatal fire landlord

Charges for not having smoke detectors

AKRON, OHIO - - As fire tore through a rented North Akron home over the weekend, there was no smoke alarm to alert the sleeping family inside. Four people, including two children, perished.
According to City of Akron statute, landlords are responsible for smoke detectors in their properties, and could face a misdemeanor charge, but that could change if there is loss of life.
As prosecutors decide this landlord's fate, others are using this tragedy as a call to action.
The Akron Fire Department has had a free smoke detector program for years. Tomorrow, they hit the pavement to keep residents safe
The Red Cross's Operation Save A Life is joining them.

If you need a smoke detector, call the Red Cross or your local fire department.
