Akron Police use Narcan to save two lives

AKRON - It was just last week when Akron Police were trained on how to properly use Project Dawn Narcan Kits. Since then, they’ve saved two lives.

Officer John Turnure has seen the opioid crisis firsthand on the streets of Akron. "It's a sad state of affairs we’re in right now," he said.

On Tuesday, he did something about it. He saved a man’s life using Narcan, an opioid antidote.

There are 35 patrol cars carrying the kits.

After they are used, they can be replenished by the Summit County Public Health Department. As long as the grant is available in Summit County, the police department will have these kits.

Every patrol car will have kits and all APD officers will be trained. They know it’s not a matter of if they’ll use them but when.

Now Turnure said he’s no hero after this. He’s just happy to have another weapon to fight in the battle against opioid abuse.
