Mother raises awareness for daughter's rare diagnosis

AKRON -- A local mother, whose daughter survived a potentially deadly condition, is hosting a 5K fundraiser for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Akron Children's Hospital.

Emily's Sparkle Sprint will be held at 9 a.m. in downtown Akron on Sept. 21.

At the age of 10, Emily Kungli was diagnosed with viral encephalitis after a mosquito bit her last summer.

"The hardest thing is watching your daughter day after day, no movement, her eyes are closed," explains Emily's Mother Gretchen Naumoff. "You know she's in there, we waited to have her sparkle back."

She spent 12 days in a medically induced coma and she eventually healed.

Emily is doing well now and has no lasting effects and her mother credits their faith and the staff at Akron Children's.
