Uber driver surrenders in alleged sexual assault of Akron passenger

An Uber driver turned himself into police today after allegedly assaulting a passenger. It is now raising new questions about the company’s standards for allowing drivers, as WKYC's Andrew Horansky explains.

AKRON, Ohio -- A 33-year-old Tallmadge man has turned himself in at the Summit County Jail amid allegations he sexually assaulted one of his Uber passengers.

Police say the incident happened March 25 when Brandon Franklin gave an intoxicated woman an Uber ride to her home in East Akron.

The 22-year-old victim told police she later awoke in her room as Franklin was sexually assaulting her.

Franklin fled the house when she pushed him out of the room.

An Uber spokesperson released a statement: "What's been described is deeply upsetting and as soon as we became aware, we banned this driver from the app. We have provided information to the Akron Police Department and will continue to support them throughout their investigation."
