ASHTABULA COUNTY - Two deputies with the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office are on paid administrative leave after responding to a domestic violence report Saturday afternoon.
Sheriff Bill Johnson confirms that a call from a man's sister came in just before 2 p.m. She says he was threatening to kill himself. Deputies responded about an hour later to 6918 Parks Road in Colebrook Township, to find that man, described as a 56 year-old white male, in the yard with a rifle in hand.
Sheriff Johnson says the suspect was combative, and when deputies asked him to put down the rifle, he refused, and then ran.
The Sheriff says deputies shot him when the suspect turned around and pointed his rifle at them. An ambulance took him to a local hospital where he died around 4:30 p.m.
His body is being examined at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office. The Sheriff says his department will be the ones to release the man’s name.
The two officers involved are off duty and have been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard protocol.
