Canton man seriously injured in Stark County crash

STARK COUNTY, OHIO - Troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol are investigating a crash that left a Canton man in serious condition at Akron General Medical Center.

The OSP report says that the crash happened just before noon today (Nov. 30) on SR 241 near Alabama in Stark County.

Troopers report that Dennis D. Shonk, 65, of Canton, was driving a 2004 Ford Ranger northbound on SR 241 when he slid off the left side of the roadway while attempting to avoid contact with an Amish buggy, driven by Eli Hershberger, of Massillon, that was northbound.

The Ford Ranger continued off the road, striking a tree and utility pole before stopping. Shonk was seriously injured. Hershberger was not injured.

Shonk was first taken to Affinity Medical Center by the Brewster Fire Department before being taken to Akron General Medical Center.

The accident remains under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be involved and Shonk was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
