Man shot after swinging bat at Canton police officer

Police involved shooting at Canton homeless center

CANTON - A suspect is in critical condition after being shot by a Canton Police officer Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at Refuge of Hope men's shelter at the 400 block of Third Street Northeast around 6 p.m.

Police say the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Kevin Jones, entered carrying a baseball bat and shouldered it in a "threatening manner" at the officer. Jones allegedly swung the bat twice in attempt to hit the officer, who drew his gun and demanded Jones drop the bat.

Police say the officer fired two shots at Jones, who was struck in the abdomen. Jones was taken to Aultman Hospital, where police say he is in critical condition.

No officers were injured.

The center says it will "seamlessly continue to provide services and support to their residents." Counseling is available to Refuge of Hope staff, residents, volunteers and dinner guests.

Anyone with additional information on the crime is asked to call the Canton Police Department's detective bureau at 330-489-3144.
