Authorities investigating after Cleveland inmate dies in custody

CLEVELAND - Units are investigating the death of a man who fell ill and died while in Cleveland Police custody.

According to the city, Darnell Evans, 55, was arrested around midnight Tuesday for misdemeanor warrants. He was booked into the city's Central Prison Unit.

The city also says Evans had a "significant medical history" and was screened during the booking process.

Evans was checked by a jail nurse and given his prescription medications around 9:48 a.m. That afternoon, Evans complained of feeling sick and EMS took him to St. Vincent Charity Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU and died around 4 p.m. Thursday.

The homicide, Integrity Control Section and Scientific Investigation units are investigating Evans' death. A cause of death has yet to be determined.
