Local passengers on Spirit Airlines problems

It is the latest ugly incident involving an airline.

Last night, chaos broke out at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after Spirit Airlines canceled nine flights, stranding hundreds of passengers.

Cell phone video captured their anger and frustration.

“It was chaotic, um, fights broke out. Lines were two to three hours,” passenger Timari Cameron said.

“I cried. I’m not going to lie, I cried,” said passenger Latreece Smith.

The airline blamed a shortage of crews brought on by its own pilots’ union, which it is suing.

The pilots’ union claims they are “not engaged in job action,” but rather, “continuing to do everything possible to help restore the company’s operations.”

Once named the worst airline by the U.S. Transportation Department, situations have gotten so tense at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport that Spirit agents have had to keep officers close by.

On Tuesday, passenger Isaac Holguin learned about the Florida incident while learning from a Spirit agent that his bag was too heavy. He and his girlfriend were headed to Los Angeles.

“It is annoying,” Holguin said. “I wish there was a different way.”

But he admits their decision to go with the low-cost carrier boiled down to cost.

“It was very cheap,” he said.

Spirit currently flies out of Akron-Canton Airport and Cleveland, where it currently serves 11 cities with direct flights.
