Man arrested for shooting at off-duty Cleveland officers

CLEVELAND - Police have arrested one man for allegedly shooting at a pair of off-duty police officers downtown Monday.

Police say two off-duty officers were working a second job as security officers for a company at Superior Avenue and E. 24th Street when an altercation occurred and several men were escorted from the business. When the two officers were returning to the building, a car approached at a high rate of speed and several shots were fired at the officers.

One officer returned fire. The car continued southbound on E. 24th Street.

Police later learned of a gunshot wound victim who checked himself in at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. When police arrived, the victim said he was shot in the leg while leaving the building at E. 24th Street and Superior Avenue.

When detectives received a photo of the shooting suspect, they arrested the man, identified as Cortez Walker, 25.

Walker is charged with felonious assault shooting, shooting at an off-duty officers, discharging a firearm into a habitation and various gun charges.

The two officers involved were not hurt.
