Man dies in Cleveland police-involved shooting

Cleveland police fatally shoot man who refuse to drop gun

CLEVELAND -- A 30-year-old man is dead following a police-involved shooting Sunday night.

It was around 9 p.m. when officers responded to the 2800 block of Mapledale where a man was allegedly threatening a woman with a gun.

Officers found the suspect and victim in a back yard.

“The officers gave the suspect multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon,” Cleveland police said in a news release late Monday morning. “The suspect did not drop the weapon. Two officers discharged their weapons at the suspect, striking him several times.”

The suspect, identified as Jeffrey James Findlay, later died at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Authorities said the victim, a 25-year-old woman, was not harmed.

Police said Findlay had a loaded .40 caliber handgun with a laser sight.

“Further information revealed that the suspect and the victim had recently ended a romantic relationship,” police said. “The suspect had come to the victim’s home and a neighbor, upon seeing him pull into the driveway, called the victim as she was aware that the victim did not want the suspect at her home.”

Police said the neighbor had tried talking Findlay into leaving, but he refused.

“The neighbor saw the suspect point something at the victim and saw a red dot on her chest,” police continued. “The victim and the neighbor fled and hid in a garage and called 911. The neighbor then climbed a fence back to another yard where she was able to direct police to the area in which the suspect had gone to find the victim.”

Based on protocol, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave and their names will be released 72 hours from the time of the incident.

As in all officer-involved shootings, this case will be reviewed by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
