Police are asking for any witnesses or information about Sunday night's pedestrian accident on St. Clair Avenue to call the Accident Investigation Unit at 216-623-5290.
About 9:45 p.m. Sunday April 16, a woman, 52, was walking eastbound on the south sidewalk of St. Clair Avenue in front 10206 St. Clair when she tried to cross St. Clair from the south sidewalk to the north sidewalk in a non-crosswalk area, police said, in a news release.
Police say that, as she entered the left eastbound lane, she was struck by an unidentified vehicle heading eastbound in the eastbound lane at what is described by witnesses as a high rate of speed.
Police say the vehicle then drove away. She was taken to University Hospitals and confined with life-threatening injuries. She died Monday April 17.
Police say they collected debris from the vehicle that was at the scene.
Based on a witness, according to police, it's believed the vehicle that struck her is likely a mid-2000s Ford Escape, dark in color, with damage to the front end -- possibly the right front area of the bumper/fender.
Police say the witness also saw what appeared to be a female driver with either a child or a child's car seat in the rear seat.
Police say the vehicle was last seen driving eastbound on St. Clair from the crash scene at E. 102nd Street and St. Clair.
Police ask that if you have any information about the fatal hit-skip or the vehicle, to please call the Accident Unit at 216-623-5290.
