Cleveland Police shoot FirstEnergy trespasser

Cle Police Officer Shoots Suspect - Tiffany Tarpley

CLEVELAND – It was around 1:30 a.m. Friday when a security officer spotted a group of people trespassing on FirstEnergy’s Illuminating Company property on E. 146th at Miles Avenue.

All four suspects ran when police arrived at the scene -- one of them shooting at the officers.

When police returned gunfire, one suspect -- an 18-year-old man -- was shot in the shoulder. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Two 17-year-old boys were also arrested.

The fourth suspect fled the scene and remains on the run.

Police recovered a handgun at the scene. It’s believed the weapon malfunctioned as the suspect was shooting at officers.

Investigators say it appears the trespassers were attempting to steal scrap metal from the site.

Neither police officer was hurt, but both have been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol.

Both officers were wearing body cameras.
