CLEVELAND -- A 17-year-old boy has died following a crash late Sunday night.

Authorities say the boy was one of several people riding as a passenger inside a 2012 Hyundai at the time of the accident.

The 20-year-old man behind the wheel was driving “well in excess of the posted speed limit of 25 mph,” according to Cleveland police. That driver allegedly went through a red light after traveling left of center around a vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and E. 71st Street.

Moments later, the vehicle was struck in the left rear quarter panel by a 2009 Chevrolet. The Hyundai went off the left side of the road and struck a utility pole.

In addition to the boy’s death, four other teen passengers in the Hyundai were treated for injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The driver of the Hyundai was treated at University Hospitals for a hip injury. Investigators say he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities say the Chevrolet driver was not hurt.

No additional information was immediately available.
