Cleveland's poorest suburb fighting money woes

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's poorest suburb is facing an uncertain financial future.

Ohio Auditor Dave Yost says two state audits of East Cleveland's finances show the impoverished community risks bankruptcy if officials do not correct financial problems.

The issues include a nearly $5 million operating loss in 2012.

Mayor Gary Norton says he's committed to solving the fiscal crisis. He sees the state audits as an important part of establishing what needs to be done.

The city had an operating loss of more than $4.9 million for 2012. If finished 2011 with 10 funds with deficit balances, and that number rose to 11 in 2012.

The auditor told the Northeast Ohio Media Group ( that East Cleveland is "the worst city in Ohio" in terms of municipal finances.
